Health Informatics Programs
Health informatics, also referred to as medical informatics, is a significant sector of health care that is rapidly growing and having individuals properly trained in this area is vital to the success of our health care industry. The focus of health care informatics centers on the organization and maintenance of patient records and information. For those that are interested in information technology and want to become part of the rapidly growing and ever changing health care industry, health informatics is an excellent area to study. Pursuing an education in health care informatics is also ideal for those already working in health care in another capacity, but would like to expand their knowledge and capabilities, thereby increasing their marketability and consideration for jobs in this industry. Job opportunities are abundant which is a significant factor, particularly in stagnant or declining economic times.
Bachelor degree programs in health informatics have become very popular since the implementation of electronic medical records (EMR) in health care agencies across the country. Certificates and masters in health informatics programs are available as are programs that combine informatics with other areas of study such as health administration. Those that graduate with a degree in health informatics work in a variety of settings. Job opportunities exist in, but are not limited to, home health care agencies, hospitals, health insurance companies, and physician practices. Graduates may obtain various positions such as consultants, data quality managers, patient information coordinators, medical record technicians, just to name a few. Career opportunities in health informatics are projected to grow as more and more health care facilities upgrade to EMR and other health related technologies.
There will be an increasing need for individuals trained in health information systems (health informatics) to manage this complex technology and the people utilizing EMR and other such systems. The health information systems or health informatics specialization will prepare students for the most recent applications of computer technology being used in health care and how to optimally collect, analyze, and use health data. Dual degree programs that include health administration courses can expand ones capabilities and knowledge of the health care industry by providing students with an understanding of management, human resources, disease states, finance and accounting. Depending on the level of degree completed, graduates will find entry level jobs in smaller facilities and in health information management. According to indeed.com, the average annual salary for professionals in the health information systems field is $56,000. Salaries will depend on location, experience and education.
