The Field of Health Care in Vermont: Find Careers and Health Care Schools in VT

Health care is one industry that continues to grow steadily and provide reliable work with benefits. It is one of the fastest growing fields in the United States, and encompasses clinical, administrative, and technical jobs requiring a variety of education levels. Vermont is very much a part of this trend. The growing elderly population in Vermont is a main contributor to the growing demand, but a large percentage of the health care workforce will also be facing retirement, which will contribute to impending job shortages in this field.

Fastest Growing Health Care Careers in Vermont

According to the Vermont Department of Labor, health care jobs and social assistance workers make up over half of the top twenty-five fastest growing jobs in the state. They are many of the top jobs in demand at both higher paying levels and jobs requiring less education. Some of the fastest growing ones in the field are pharmacy technicians, home health aides, pharmacists, mental and public health social workers, and medical assistants.

Vermont’s Largest Health Care Employers

Hospitals are not the only employers for health care jobs, though they are the largest offering the most jobs. Vermont strives to ensure that adequate health care is available in rural areas as well, and these jobs are needed throughout the state, and not just in the larger towns. America’s Career InfoNet states that some of the largest employers, however, are hospitals listed below:

  • Allen Fletcher Healthcare: Located in Burlington, this community hospital and academic medical center employs 6,700 people, both full and part-time.
  • Rutland Regional Medical Center: Located in Rutland and associated with Rutland Regional Health Services, this facility employs just over 1,300 people
  • Southwestern Vermont Medical Center: This is located in Bennington, employing roughly 1,300 people.
  • Central Vermont Medical Center: Located in Berlin, this facility includes the medical center as well as a nursing home and several medical practices. It has 1,200 full and part-time employees.
