Healthcare has become the biggest private-sector employer in Michigan, outpacing even the automotive industry, according to a study done by Partnership for Michigan’s Health. Healthcare jobs in Michigan face huge growth in all regions of the state, generating over $26 billion in benefits and pay each year. It is an industry that many local economists hope will revitalize Michigan’s economy. This widening of opportunity presents jobs that not only pay well, but are stable and will remain local, unlike some fields that can outsource work to other locations or states.

Much of the growth is attributed to the aging of Michigan’s population, but experts also believe that newly built hospitals and medical facilities in the Detroit area, along with new medical technologies, have contributed to the tremendous growth of jobs in the health sector. A 2004 study conducted for the Michigan Dept. of Labor and Economic Growth predicted that the state will need to fill over 100,000 health care-related jobs before 2015. Nurses in particular, revealed the study by the Partnership for Michigan’s Health, will face enormous potential shortages as over half are either over age 55 or state their intent to leave the profession in the next ten years. In fact, in August of 2008, Michigan’s Governor granted 6.5 million to the Michigan Nursing Corps to help expand nursing training programs across the state.
